I thought this was an honest and very authentic portrayal of not only her experience leaving the Watchtower Society, but the Society itself.She accounts for absolutely everything she says regarding their doctrines and practices in general with page numbers from the Watchtower literature to back up everything she says. I also found what she learned about cults, and the how and why people get sucked into them to be very interesting as well.
I bought this book after a couple of very nice Jehovah's Witnesses came to my door. I am an atheist, but did not know a lot about this particular branch of Christianity, although they put a lot more emphasis on Jehovah than Jesus. Diane's story is mesmerizing and infuriating. The only drawback was the number of times, despite all the insanity and mental cruelty she witnessed, that she still wasn't ready to pull the plug on this life-draining cult. So it was a little repetitive, but this illustrates how powerful indoctrination is. They pull you in with peace and love and promises of "family," and then, after your family is in the cult, you risk losing them if you leave. Shunning is one of the tools they practice enthusiastically. I recommend this book for anyone who wants to know what these smiling, mellow people are really thinking. I'm sure they believe I'm possessed by demons. But no. I'm just able to use my brain.
I actually thought the book was well written, and having grown up in the Jehovah's witnesses religion with both Parents indoctrinated into the Watchtower, I could relate to alot of what Diane went through. I think next to Ray Franz's book, this is probably the best personal account of being a Jehovah's Witnesses that I have ever read. I applaud Diane for her courage, and her honesty. I found myself cheering her on as she slowly overcame her doubts and fears and slowly through her internal transformation found the strength to break the chains that held her captive for so long. Once she got past the fear and doubts and believed in herself she was able to move on.The only criticism I have is that I agree that the quotes of the watchtower articles may have been a little much and took away from her telling her story which is why I only gave 4 stars. However I also appreciate Dr. Bergman's commentary and input. He helped me to see the emotional and psychological impact the organization has on people. By exposing that it will help people to be able to have the strength to walk away. He has not only helped Diane but he has positively affected the lives of countless others who will read this book and because of him be able to find their own strength to break free.Therefore, I think it was important to have Dr. Bergman involved in this book. I am impressed that he put so much time and effort into helping with this. I wish more therapist would be open to learning about these kinds of organizations and thus they would be able to better assist clients who deal with these sorts of issues. I would highly recommend this book and will read it a few more times!
Diane Wilson wrote in the Preface to this 2002 book, "This work is not a doctrinal treatise about Jehovah's Witnesses: instead, it is an issues-oriented human interest story that reveals inside information about twenty-five years of my adult life in this Christian sect... My hope is that readers will take away with them an increased understanding of how extremely difficult leaving a legalistic, controlling group like Jehovah's Witnesses can be---even when a person desperately wants to leave."Here are some additional quotations from the book:"...many Witnesses became quite creative in finding other ways to put in their time in the preaching work; one popular way was to develop a 'magazine route.' This was accomplished by making a list of persons who regularly had accepted the 'Watchtower' and 'Awake!' magazines in the door-to-door work; then the Witnesses could spare their aching feet by driving to these houses, delivering the latest magazines to these people." (Pg. 35)"For many Witnesses, the preaching work became little more than a game of how to get the highest number of hours and literature placements to put down on their monthly service report, instead of a sincere effort to search out people to warn about this doomed system of things." (Pg. 36)"...the Society took control of another aspect of the conventions by eliminating the live orchestra---which was comprised of volunteer Witness musicians---and substituting a prerecorded musical tape instead.... The Society's attitude ... implied that no one would use their God-given talents purely for the worship of God, to the enjoyment and benefit of others." (Pg. 63)"The brother's proclamation at the (winter 1975) assembly... spoke enthusiastically to keep excitement and interest at a peak, (but) was also starting to hedge about just what would happen in the autumn of 1975." (Pg. 79)"(After 1975) The Society did not acknowledge that it was the source of these wrong premises! ... The Society claimed that its blunder was for our benefit as an excuse for its failed prophecy." (Pg. 82)"The Society attributes changes in its doctrines to a 'new light' of understanding from God..." (Pg. 89)"Witnesses claim to have intense love for one another, but ... it produced an artificial love ... that was superficial at best, and was born out of fear of dying at Armageddon rather than coming from their hearts. They didn't seem to care about one another as people, but only as Witnesses." (Pg. 138)
I purchased this well-written book because I had recently married a "disfellowshipped" JW and wanted to try to understand where he was coming from and what he was mentally going through since his disfellowshipping.Initially I considered joining the Jehovah Witnesses in order for my husband to be reinstated in the group, in addition to being allowed to communicate with his grown JW children once again; however, after listening to his past 30-year experiences and reading this book, along with a few other books on the subject, I feel like I've sidestepped entering a nightmare!!Thank you, Diane Wilson, for your courage in writing this book and sharing your experience with us!
