Review

"If you felt Leonard Cohen’s death in 2016 as a personal assault, this book is a posthumous balm . . . All of Cohen’s work has a raw, straight-to-the-heart intensity―reach for this the next time you need inspiration for a wedding toast that will leave them gutted, or any other moment you need a little sustenance for the soul." --Chloe Schama, Vogue "Cohen's final volume shows his poetic soul. If you know the man only because of “Hallelujah” or “Suzanne,” pick up The Flame and warm yourself within its pages." --Bethanne Patrick, The Washington Post"It’s clear that Cohen remained sharp until the very end, and the book, a kind of farewell tribute by the poet-prophet, offers ample evidence of his abiding sense of humor . . . Though he claimed not to know the origins of his poetry nor to be able to locate his mission, what Cohen offered his many fans and followers was the opportunity to partake of the kind of spiritual experience that makes it possible for us to feel, if only for a moment, that we are not alone." ―Shoshana Olidort, Los Angeles Review of Books"[A] grand book . . . elegant . . . Leonard Cohen does not use language to pose, startle or to reinvent. Words are his old comrades, and see him through to the end." --Kate Kellaway, The Observer (U.K.)"In The Flame, an aging artist struggles with questions of death and legacy ― and tries not to take them too seriously, true to his claim never to do so . . . If [this is] how long it takes to say ‘so long’ to someone beautiful, we’ll be listening to Cohen ― still smirking and smiling ― for decades to come, with this collection as our companion." --Hannah Niemeier, The Spectator (U.K.)"Poignant and brave, lit up with flashes of anger, this is a luminous collection and classic Cohen." ―Booklist (starred)"Cohen was a poet before he was a musician, and with this posthumous collection his career completes its circle." --Financial Times (Best Books of 2018)"Steeped in somber reckoning, The Flame takes the long view that only age affords . . . Sprinkled with Cohen’s self-portrait sketches, The Flame is full of gestures so intimate it’s almost a voyeuristic experience . . . The work feels both like a final speech and a disrobing. In perusing the sizeable volume, one can’t help but feel privy to something raw and shining, both uncomfortably and movingly revealing, the final laying-bare of a unique chronicler of the human heart." ―BookPage"The Flame is Cohen's last gift to us . . .Cohen’s radical honesty and wit became more refined and purified with each passing year . . .He magicked and mastered us after all, getting us to clamor for the bitter pill of his tender, scathing, suffering, beatific vision." --Pamela Erens, Virginia Quarterly Review "Authentic and revelatory in ways that final novels and poetry collections are not." --Charles Foran, The Walrus (Canada)"The Flame provides fascinating insight into Cohen’s unique talent . . . The entire collection is an intricate exploration of the happenings of the human heart, infused with Cohen’s signature themes of longing, love and loss . . . The Flame shows the great power of words to endure long after the person who has written them has passed away, and to offer relief from suffering and elevate the spirits – not only for the writer, but for the reader and listener, too." --Anita Sethi, iNews (U.K.)"A kaleidoscopic archive, a mix-tape of emotions that reveals Cohen’s fears and vulnerability with an unusually raw candour. After 10 books of poetry and two novels, it reminds us that the music man who taught the world to scale the chords of Hallelujah still considered writing his first and ultimate vocation . . . it seems Leonard Cohen has left enough words and music for us to carry on without him." --Brian D. Johnson, Macleans (Canada)"Leonard Cohen offers in The Flame a collection of writing that stands proudly at the end of his body of work . . . Cohen’s poems emerge in The Flame as compelling, mingling all the different mentioned themes with a sense of urgency that lurks just beyond their lightness and somewhat self-deprecating humour. It’s a balance that Cohen has always navigated well, that between seriousness and playfulness, intensity and lightness. His person seeps through the lines and results from these contrasts as incredibly humble, intelligent, and ever surprising . . . The Flame is a work of moving intimacy, a touching final offering of a writer who was devoted to his art until the very end." ―Elisa Sabbadin, Pendora (Canada)

I pre-ordered this back in April as soon as I saw it announced. It arrived today, and I eagerly sat down to enjoy taking it in. As I read each verse of the the opening poem, Happens to the Heart, I could imagine hearing Leonard's distinct voice interpreting it in song, and was reminded that it is a song I will regretfully never hear. The immense feelings of sadness I experienced two years ago upon hearing of his passing returned. I have put the book down and will return to it when I am ready.

In the last days of his life, Leonard Cohen prepared his last book, gathering drawings, unpublished material, and the lyrics from his last albums. He was a man who knew he was in his last days and an artist who needed to send out one last envoy to the world. That book has been published as The Flame. The image on the cover is the burning bush, a green tree surrounded by fire and yet is not burned by the flames. Cohen's "flame burned bright within him to the very end," said Robert Kory, manager and trustee of the Cohen estate, “this book, finished only days before his death, reveals the intensity of his inner fire to all.”One of the first record albums I bought as an early teen was The Songs of Leonard Cohen. I later bought the songbook. I grew up listening to those songs, singing those songs, strumming chords on my guitar. When an ARC of Cohen's final book The Flame arrived I downloaded the digital album and revisited those songs while opening the book to read.As I worked my way through the book I researched Cohen's life and work online. I discovered the poets who he admired and influenced him, including Frederico Garcia Lorca; Cohen even named his daughter Lorca. The drawings are primarily self-portraits, his face deeply creased and intense, and of women, spiritual imagery, and a few still lifes. Facsimiles of his manuscripts are also included. The selections are confessional, addressing his personal struggles with depression, relationships, and spiritual meaning. Rhythm is more important than rhyme. The imagery is often very personal, arcane, but also with references to Biblical stories and Jewish history. The message I gather is this: When love fails to save us and faith fails to bring grace, and the world has become merciless, music and poetry become acts of resistance rebellion. The creative urge engenders the flame that can not be quenched or dimmed by the world.I received an ARC from the publisher through a Goodreads giveaway.

Leonard Cohen was a genius.

This is a book to be read slowly, to be savored, and to be read again and again. Leonard Cohen was and is in a class of his own. Absolutely beautiful.

I have been a Leonard Cohen fan forever. I have read all his books, know every lyric to every song. The man was an incredible poet/songwriter. A brilliant word master in every way. So when I saw that his last work was being published in 'The Flame' , I was very enthusiastic , and anticipating his best work ; Unfortunately, this book is certainly not his best work, and in fact probably the absolute worst work that I have ever seen come from this extraordinary man. Yes, there are many songs in the book that are familiar to all of Cohen's fans, songs that fill pages , but are not really new representations of Cohen. Those songs are all present in his albums, so it's a bit redundant to fill up a half of book with them. But the real disappointment is the poetry. The poems in this book are mostly rhyming poems, all very simplistic and dealing with the same subject matter page after page. The poems suggest that Cohen was just toying with rhyme , not really submitting anything of intrinsic value , but rather just sketching with language , filling up space. The deep emotional pools of his wisdom of the past is not present in these poems. There is no gold to mine for those of us seeking one last bit if Cohen to hold onto. No spiritual quest, or profound wisdom of passing the torch . Instead, one finds himself reading poetry that questions if it was actually written by Cohen. Its undisciplined, sophomoric , and almost deliberately insulting to poetic integrity. It's beyond belief that these poems represent the last years of Leonard Cohen.Of course, there are poems from previous years also, but the majority again, are rhyming poems, with little value in their substance. The journals are also vague, and leaves no sense of his deeper inner spirit . The introduction by his Son Adam is beautifully written. It's the definitely the only part of the book that is memorable. Im sorry that this book is supposed to represent Cohen's farewell. I find it impossible to believe that he endorsed it.

After Book of Mercy and Book of Longing, I had high hopes for The Flame, but I was left feeling...underwhelmed? The song lyrics section can be left out - especially if you've bought "You Want It Darker" (and you should), the lyrics stand on their own. If I want song lyrics in print, there other places to go for that.I can't speak for all Cohen fans, but I would have gladly waited for a 600+ page volume of his notebooks and correspondence, as well as more of his poetry. This just seems rushed.

I’ve waited for this release and printing. I LOVE Leonard Cohen. I read his poetry and heard his first album when I started college in 1967. I grew old with him and followed his work and writings my whole life. What a man!! What a poet!!!There will NEVER be another like him. He was a gift from God. Thank you to his son,Adam Cohen, that took time and effort to help be sure this was printed after the death of his father. What an honor he paid his father. RIP Leonard Cohen. Your last effort was finalized, thanks to your son. You must have also been quite a father. You were a private man and did it your way. You never sold your soul for money. You loved and died a POET!! Hurrah for you!!

I have only just received the book, opened it up to the middle and cried at the poem i read. I am really looking forward to reading more.

This seems to be the standard reference book for California cruising. It contains essential information for yachtsmen sailing the California coast and offshore islands. It has many useful simplified charts and photos of approaches to harbors and anchorages. It also has a useful chapter on local weather forecasting. Although California weather is mostly pretty benign, it can also make life very difficult to any sailor who is unprepared for bad weather, and Fagan provides plenty of good advice on how to predict it, and how to deal with it.

I do enjoy the anecdotes and I don't mind processing outdated information. Where I draw the line is poorly written/edited work.

Hey people are right in their reviews this book IS the one you need for sailing California waters. Very glad I have it. This is a go-to research book for me now.

I *thought* I knew about the Channel Islands and the different weather systems around Southern California. I've sailed here for a few years, and have gone up into the Channel Islands. Heck, I was married on Catalina.Starting to read Fagan's book, it became quickly evident that I didn't know anything about this rich area. Fagan breaks down multi micro climates into detailed and descriptive blocks, highlighting which routes will show off what type of weather in different parts of the year. If you already know what the weather will be like in Santa Cruz Channel in October, or when Cuyler Harbor turns into a dangerous lee shore (and what conditions to watch for in advance), then I suppose you don't need this book.If you're going to be harbor hopping along the mainland, you can probably get by without it. But if you're going to be heading off the grid into the fringes of the no-kidding Pacific, you'd be foolish to read Fagan's book first. Ask anyone who's done a lot of sailing in the Channel Islands, and you'll hear "Fagan's book" pop up in discussion within a few minutes. Charlie's Charts, although useful in other areas (primarily down in Mexico) do not cut the mustard against Fagan.Highly recommended, and if you only have sailing book related to Southern California this should easily be it.

Cruised up and down the coast of SoCal and the Channel Islands using the information in this book. It has great details, suggestions and pictures. There isnt another book out there for SoCal as good as this one. I think without the book, you would miss out on some real gems.

Very informative. So glad we had it for our first trip to the Channel Islands.

Born and raised in So Cal. Great book to learn about my backyard.

Good, useful material for mariners along southern California coast.
