This book was an excellent read and written by a truly brilliant author. Bova was an editor as well as a space researcher who helped with various space programs. Science Fiction is not always the easiest genre to write within; upon reading this text anyone attempting to write and sell sci-fi stories will [at least] gain some confidence and a few notions to consider. Bova mentions story technique, as well as a few tech journals and even a website which offers a free critique service/workshop (in the last few pages of the book) for upcoming writers in sci-fi, horror, fantasy, and many others. I like this book mostly for the recommendations on story crafting; however, I liked two other things, too. The end of chapter checklists are good to refer to while proofing a new story, and the example stories he includes are an impressive addition to the text. If you enjoy sci-fi and are considering doing some writing of your own in the genre, be sure to read this book. I don't normally spend my team reading writers talking about themselves. But I love almost every book I have read of Ben Bova's which is quite a few. So, I thought I would give it bend, and see if it was somehow interesting.Oh my god. It is amazing. It is a simple book that is designed to do what the title says. I have a book I am trying to finalize, and I went back to most of the core sections because of what I learned in this book. Like I said, I wasn't expecting much. He has such simple sage wisdom, it is impossible to ignore.If the title interests you, the book will be massively useful. If the title is irrelevant in your life, so will the book be.

Ben Bova should know SF. He ran two of the most respected magazines in SF in his day and has the Hugos to prove it. In addition, he's written a number of SF novels admired for his attention to scientific realism and detail. The target audience for this book is writers of science fiction in the specific sense of the term. If you're looking for literary SF, this may not be the book for you, but if you like traditional SF, look no further.While I also heartily recommend Orson Scott Card's How to Write Science Fiction & Fantasy, it's not on Kindle (I hope this changes), and it has a different focus than Bova's. In fact, Bova was Orson Scott Card's editor of a number of his early short stories, such as his classic "Ender's Game." Moreover, Bova's advice really resonates with what Card manages to do in his own fiction--aspects that Card mentions but not quite as directly.Other writing anthologies have made use of the idea that the writer put his money where his mouth is: That is, he reprints his own fiction to put on the chopping block, to examine how the stories work. They may not be literary classics, but they are quite effective at doing exactly what recommends. This one's worth more than one read. Cheers to Mr. Bova.

This book divides character, background, conflict and plot into three parts. With examples this shows how theoretical ideas were handled in an actual story. Then chapters on background, conflict and plot: theory first, then a short story, followed by a chapter on practice using the story as illustration. Then the different demands writing makes on the novelists, and how challenges are met. Next is preparation and the writing task. Marketing novels and short fiction, followed by ideas, style and other successful storytelling techniques. This book is a path of putting information into neural wiring that is basically unchanged. Homer, Goethe and Shakespeare used these techniques. I see this book as the fabric of successful writing, never simple or mechanic. This book offers valuable instruction, and would be perfect as a reference in a personal library. I own a copy of this book.

I was feeling stuck, not sure how to move forward on my story and looking for some inspiration when I found this. If you've read other 'How-To' books on writing, most of the ideas will be familiar. While I was reading it felt like there was as much 'What not to do' as there was 'To do' advice. But at the end of it I came back to my story with new momentum, and feel like it really helped me get unstuck. Your results may vary of course. His advice is for those looking to write short stories and novels, but I feel much of it applies to those writing for games, tv, or movies. I found his advice to be very intuitive and easy to digest. Also there are a few nuggets of wisdom you won't find in other books. Well worth it!

This is better as a source book for Celtic knots rather than as a coloring book. Some of the pages were very simple with lots of white space. Thin paper, printed both sides. Returned.

Definitely ripped off a bunch of low-quality images from the internet, and couldn't even be bothered to erase all the backgrounds properly or un-pixelize them.

Most of the designs are much simpler that I had envisioned, so I use them on the days when I don't feel like doing detail work. I do enjoy the repetition and symmetry of the Celtic designs, though.

These are simple designs, and very easy to color. I color in this book when I want to unwind and don't want anything complicated.

Even though this is a coloring book, my husband uses it for ideas for his wood carvings

It is OK, more like a clip art collection hastily put together into a coloring book.

The designs are so basic. I wouldn't classify this as an adult coloring book at ALL.

I've had a Russian tortoise for over 20 years but I still haven't found a really great book about this type of tortoise. This is the best one I've read. A lot of information, some pictures and helpful advice.

This book is the most state of the art in books of the breed; concise with plenty of food for thought as well as vital info. Magnificent content. Less photos and 100 times more info-the way a care book should be.

This didnt really go into detail about the diseases tortoises can get and what to do to prevent if anything can be done.

Pretty comprehensive book. Most of the information is basic, but it is more elaborate than what you will find on the internet. Easy to read.

My wife loves the book. I scanned through it. A lot of helpful stuff in it and great for a first time Tortoise owner such as ourselves.

Great book! I learned a lot of information that I needed to know before making the purchase of tortoise! Everyone should read this before owning one such great helpful information!

I thought it was a very informative book. Helped me a lot! I didn't feel like I got enough information from the pet store and internet to feel comfortable taking care of my daughter's new tortoise.

I have three initial, personal takeaways from reading this book.1) about believing in God - He wants us to know & trust him, not just believe (from John's words to Lilly)2) about evil - it is everywhere, even in the most precious of places (referencing: in the Garden, in the Refuge, in marriage, in friendship)3) about loneliness - We never have been nor are we ever alone. (from Lilly's realizations about Adam in the Garden and about herself.)I saw some of the interview of the author with Maria Shriver today. I don't think this is a book about women & how Eve (and all women) have been forever blamed for eating from the Tree of Knowledge. It does describe the fall of man in a very detailed & compelling & heart pounding way. It depicts & describes Biblical events beautifully - like the Garden, Creation, births of Adam & Eve, and more. This book, like The Shack, gives some additional framework for the reader to consider more detail than scripturally written. And, the story of Lilly, her hurt & healing, like The Shack, is amazing. My jaw dropped at the end, in a good way. I personally feel directed back to the scriptures and to my genuine love for God.

This novel is very different. I would call it an allegory. It made me realize just how much God loves His children as well as just how broken we are. God spoke to me through this book. I already had a personal relationship with Him, but He drew me even closer. I noticed some of the reviews were negative. I perceive that those who don't like the book either don't know the Lord or have a religious spirit. The author, I don't think means for us to take it literally as the Word of God but as a better way to understand God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. I came away with the feeling that if we look upon His face and don't turn away, we will be in the light and there will be no darkness in us. However the minute we turn even slightly away, darkness begins to seep in, probably in the form of doubt and unbelief. We have to know, that we know, that we know that He is God and that He will never let us down.

I couldn't put this book down!!! Totally made me hungry to read the bible again in a whole different way!! It also made me realize that so much happens between every sentence of the bible and we just have to ask God to reveal that to us

I really liked The Shack and very much appreciate Paul Young's provocative portrayal of God and faith.However, Eve is a failure at almost every level.(spoilers at the end)The setting of the story is some sort of limbo/purgatory; no one seems to know what. Those living there are known by their roles/gifts (e.g. Collector, Finder, Healer, Scholar). The story starts off with the main character - a Collector whose name is John - having a conversation with Eve who describes the coming event as the birth of her daughter. A strange ship floats in from Earth (?) containing the bodies of a dozen young teenage girls and 1 middle-aged man. It was obvious that girls had been victims of sex-trafficking and the man had been trying to free them before they were caught and all shot execution-style. On further examination, another girl is found broken and half-alive. Once the girl, whose name is later revealed as Lilly, is revived, she begins to have excursions into the past with Eve in order to be a Witness. Meanwhile, several Scholars come to learn from what she is a witness to, one of whom brings his own darkness with him. There are allusions to angels and other higher beings, but they are mostly unseen.I'm the sort of person who should really like this book. It has elements of fantasy, a central mystery and theological insights, but it just left me befuddled. Unfortunately. the fantastical elements were nebulous, the story by turns predictable or just plain muddled and the characters completely non-descript. Even the main character, Lilly is not at all sympathetic or likeable. When unexpected events happened, it was not because they moved the story along, but seemed to be just pulled out of nowhere with no relevance to the story. Theologically, Young takes an overlooked insight into the nature of man and woman, but then uses it to supercede the egalitarian vs complementarian debate and move into outright feminist gynocentrism. I don't see anyway that this book receives anything but universal condemnation**Spoilers**The dark Scholar immediately starts calling her Lilith. That tells you the point of the novel. it is a retelling of the Lilith myth.After the Fall, Adam is thrown out of the garden, but not Eve. Every night he comes to the garden and cries out for her, but with no response. Once Lilly is seduced by the darkness and restored to her previous state as teenaged-prostitute, she goes back to Adam as Lilith to become Eve's replacement. He rejects her and she seeks death, but God restores her within the purifying fire of the wall around Eden. Eve eventually leaves Eden to join Adam. There is then a weird scene where Lilly joins Eve and Mary, the mother of Jesus, during the years after the fall where they commiserate about how all her sons (the men) do is fight.As the book comes to an end, her companions are all called away to their next calling. In the end, the main character is *sadly* taken to Heaven and Lilly is escorted into a room which the office of the head of the mental health clinic she's been at where she finds her previous companions as her 'new' caretakers (although it is also obvious that at this point she is already completely healed through the fires of Eden).
