This Bryan Kest routine has a number of advanced elements, cobras and other poses held for 5 breaths or more, a standing pose sequence that is quite intense, a plough pose that would not be recommended for a beginner, etc. Nevertheless, many of the more difficult sequences can be easily modified or skipped over making this an approachable yet challenging practice. Note again that poses are held for reasonable amounts of time, so those of you expecting a fast movement vinyasa flow workout might be disappointed-this one will not cause you to break a sweat- still, there is generally ample opportunity to "sink" into the poses should that be your preference. Note that this is primarily a core routine with a couple of sequences of push-ups thrown in- no lunges, warriors or triangles.Kest's focus here is on the breath- maintaining an even, deep breathing flow through the nose and by deep he doesn't mean hyperventilation (good advice as I found myself huffing and puffing on a few of the more challenging poses). Other reviewers found his voice and comments distracting at best and often irritating. Tastes vary of course, but I found his comments encouraging and his instructions to the point and helpful. The spiral bound booklet is of good quality and useful but I imagine most people will be able to dispense with it after some experience with the routine. The audio is spread over 2 CD's and lasts a full 90 minutes. Having a multi disc player or downloading to an iPod would insure continuity.Beginners should consider this product only after becoming familiar with a decent variety of yoga poses (taking several classes would prove useful) and with a good understanding of their (the practitioners') limitations (I should know I'm a beginner). However, approached with this knowledge and a healthy dose of patience, this could prove a rewarding program.

People either love Bryan Kest of they detest him - I happen to love him. He does talk a good bit but he does not ramble here like I have heard him do on other recordings. The talking is actually helpful instead of distracting when you are listening on your ipod and his voice is your only cue. As some reviewers have pointed out this is not really a beginners set but I am not really sure a beginner should be learning yoga from an audio cd anyway. This set is for advanced beginners to intermediate practitioners. There are no pretzel positions but there are lots and lots of sun salutations and little rest of your wrists if you are not used to holding your body up for over an hour. Over all a really good routine that I turn to time and time again. Note: for people who do not like their yoga to "new agey" Kest is a good fit since although he does see yoga as a spiritual as well as physical practice his accent is little too New Yorker to be considered fluffy and he does not use flowery phrases like Yee and some others. If you like the P90X yoga and are looking for a new routine then he is probably your go to guy.

I can't begin to say enough good things about this workout. I am an aficianada of Bryan Kest's original Power Yoga series from 1995. I also enjoy his new videos (especially Intensive Sculpting) from 2002. But...I just love this CD. It is the best workout that I have done in a long time - maybe ever. I thought initially that it might be weird working out without the visual imagery of video, but it is actually better. Bryan's voice is extra soothing, and his direction easily guides you from pose to pose without needing to look at the included book, (assuming that you know a few basic poses, such as cobra and down dog - the others he aptly describes.) I found myself more able to concentrate on the yoga, without distraction. The basic workout begins a bit more relaxed than his Power Yoga series, taking a bit more time to stretch, as opposed to getting your muscles "hot" right away. But before long, you find that your heart rate is getting up there and your muscles are working and that you are doing some invigorating but really challenging balances. This is spinal strenghening at its best, relaxation at its deepest. Bryan Kest's emphasis is, as always, on knowing your body and its limitations and first and foremost, feeling the breath. Another nice thing about this workout is that although it is divided between two CD's, the second CD is basically the last stretches and relaxation, so if you have a single CD player machine, you are not changing the discs in the middle of an intense pose. Also, you might like to do the relaxation CD by itself sometime, just to unwind. A bonus is the book, which has all of the poses and could be taken on a vacation even when you don't want to take the CD. This CD is great - and a day after doing this workout, all of my muscles feel like they got their fair workout. Six stars. Check it out.

There are 2 CDs in the package, and I've done just the first CD which encompasses a little over 1 hour. It's quintessential Bryan. The poses are quite similar to those found in Intensive Body Sculpting, like the pretty challenging "half-moon pose" (which I haven't yet managed to perfect, but I'm working on it) but you also get a lot of boat poses for your core/abs (boat pose is when sitting, you raise your legs up straight until you form a "V" shape and you hold your legs for about five breaths, with your arms parallel to the ground) and a bunch of spinal stretches.Overall, I thought the CD was good. It's part strengthening/part stretching, and complements Bryan's other practices. I don't know if there are other yogis who do poses like Bryan does his. I've tried Shiva Rea's Yoga Shakti (which I didn't like) and some Baron Baptiste (which I didn't think was as challenging as Bryan Kest). So it's safe to say I'm a Bryan-Kestophile. His stuff really gets me going.Very strongly recommended.

What a life! If you can call it that. Stabbing's,beating's, Con job's, shooting's,shooting up + too much more . These stories overwhelm the stories of her singing career. She wanted drama and got it in truck load's! Besides South L.A., she lived in the Fillmore (San Francisco) where Johnny Otis discovered her. One of her singing buddy's is SugarPie DeSanto which a friend of mine was close to her, way back. On my show I played;"Maybe you'll be there" & "I don't feel sorry" are classic's by Sugarpie. Etta&SugarPie recorded their duo's on the Don Barksdale's Rhythm label. I had listened to all these great singer's she associated with, Jessie Belvin,Little Willie John,Richard Berry ("Louie Louie"),Chuck Berry,Tina Turner,Aretha Franklin,Sly Stone and on and on, The cream of the Crop of R&B and beyond. Minnesota Fat's may have been her PaPa? He would hang out with Willie Best the actor ("High Sierra" etc.) She talks about her singing ballad's with string's and her tough bluesy side. She Idolized her mother, but, wasn't there much. Another woman that was more of a mother than the real one was;Momma Lou , There is too much to tell here. There are ton's and ton's more stories here, within these pages ! ! !

Like many others, I was introduced to Etta James through great songs, like, "At Last," "I Just Wanna Make Love To You," "I'm a W-O-M-A-N," and "All I Could Do is Cry." The woman couldn't just sing the blues - she also lived them. That is beautifully illustrated, here, in Rage to Survive: The Etta James. Born to a humble background and a young mother, young Jamesetta Hawkins faced poverty, racism (she was biracial) and also early stardom as a firebrand of a singer. Her talent was made evident early. So was her penchant for mixing it up with deviant and destructive behavior.Etta does not a bat an eye or withhold anything in this amazing account of her soaring ups and plummeting downs. Etta didn't just dabble or "experiment" with drugs - she subsisted on them like they were her food, part of her very being and they shaped the decisions she made with relationships, living arrangements and many other day-to-day factors. In and out of jail, rehab centers and the arms of bad ass men, this sassy, sexy, sultry songbird lived life to the hilt, before her passing, earlier this year. She also leaves a legacy, with shoes no one can ever fill for eternity. Often imitated, never replicated. Read about her rage to survive. It will shift your way of viewing this amazing woman. A hell of a writer.

Despite all odds, Miss Etta is still with us: read this book if you have the courage to learn what life 'on the road' was like for an entertainer in the 50's and 60's, with the difficulty enhanced tremendously for African-Americans. The debt today's divas owe Etta and others from 40 years ago will never be repaid. The book pulls no punches: white record label owners shafted their acts in every way imaginable, yet there's a snapshot of Leonard Chess that you'll be thankful for. Etta writes of doing heroin with Little Esther, being in and out of jail, being up and down, getting her "X" by joining the Black Muslims, touring with Little Richard, the dangers of driving through Dixie in the late 50's and early 60's with a blond 'do' (and a monkey). There's another reason to buy the book: you can dine out for weeks by sharing the story of Etta's father. The book includes a photo of the two of them side-by-side. Yup, amazing resemblance. And no, I'm not going to tell.Etta did the Letterman tv show a few weeks ago; is still making music. She's a national treasure. When she appeared in Dallas I slipped a note to a member of her crew to pass along, thanking her for all the music that has meant so much to me. If you've never heard Etta, look for that two cd set of her Chess recordings. One listen, and you'll be hunting for a pen and pad to send her the same kind of note.

I'll be the first one to admit, I'm not a huge lover of books, but when I find one that holds my interest, I become engulfed in the story and it becomes hard for me to put it down. This book proves that point very well. This book is not only a must read for Etta James fans but it also should be recommended to anyone who enjoys reading about overcoming obstacles. Etta's story is so powerful and thrilling, that I firmly believe she was put on this earth for something far too great to measure. I have never read an autobiography more brutally honest than this one. Too many times in autobiographies (especially those by singers/entertainers) the author paints themselves in the best light possible, this is not a normal autobiography. In this book Etta tells us candid, dark tales of her life that seem so outrageous it leaves the reader questioning whether Etta is making this stuff up! During the time I was reading this book I learned so much about Etta as a person and the impression she made on me was as a caring yet honest person who unfortunately got caught up in the pitfalls of life and thankfully made it out with her life, barely! Etta's had many close calls and I'm sure she thanks the lord for giving her the strength to make it through them.Another reason to get this book is for her often times brutally honest nature about fellow celebrities including Marvin Gaye, James Brown, Bo Diddley and many others; Etta's descriptions of them are at times very candid. In one of the chapters Etta tells of the egotistical nature of James Brown and Marvin Gaye, But even when engaging in these unflattering remarks, Etta doesn't come off as mean, But instead as honest; Etta holds no punches on herself and others and if that means pissing someone off, then so be it! That's the way Etta comes off in this book.I should also mention that Previous to me reading this book I also purchased the Etta James Gold collection, To make me better appreciate Etta as a singer and after reading this book, I must recommend that collection as a companion piece to this book, To fully experience the "Etta effect". Sadly earlier this year I was shocked to learn that Etta has been diagnosed with the incurable Alzheimer's disease, so there's a chance Etta won't be here much longer. Get this book while Etta's still here with us and learn about this amazing woman before it's too late!

I'm usually not a big fan of non-fiction books, but I thoroughly enjoyed this one! The author has a very personable way of writing that made me feel like I was having a nice, informal dinner with him and his wife. I also appreciated the fact that this wasn't a tell-all type of book that tried to show the reader the ugly side of the occupants of the White House. Instead, it struck me as being extremely truthful and down to earth. It was written with great warmth and respect. As a result Mr. West has shown the first ladies and their families as human beings, and made them very accessible to those of us who will never find ourselves serving in any comparable position. I'm old enough to remember the Eisenhower presidency, and to have lived through the Cuban missile crisis and Kennedy assassination. As a native Texas I remember very well Lyndon Johnson's presidency and his big personality, as well as Lady Bird's highly-successful beautification efforts. But these weren't the only reasons the book made me quite nostalgic. We now live in an age where everyone seems determined to undermine each other and treat opponents as sub-human. It was good to remember the times when opponents could duke it out during the day but then go out for dinner or drinks, or have a meal at each other's homes while the kids played together. I wish Mr. West was still alive so I could hope he would see this review and know that his stories have touched my heart.

Interesting book about the families that occupied in the White House from Presidents Roosevelt to Nixon. JB West, the head usher, gives an insider's look at the First Ladies and the way they made the house their own. Fascinating on many levels, it's a unique microcosm of our changing society. The shift in social status and the way things are done, as the Roosevelt's upper crust lifestyle exits, compared to the bread and butter of Harry Truman's middle America. Mami Eisenhower's velvet gloves fifties style housewife, contrasts Jackie Kennedy's upper crust finishing school that brought a new elegance to the White House. Everything is lovingly detailed from the strange requests, the guest and parties, births and deaths, making each First Family unique. This book concentrates on women thrust into a peculiar position, torn from their regular lives, to create the illusion of normalcy for their families, all while being a role model for a country that has not quite figured out exactly what they are supposed to do.

“The secret was loyalty to the White House and to the Presidency, rather than to whoever happens to be occupying the office for four years, or eight.” J.B. West, Upstairs at the White House: My Life with the First LadiesThis was published in 1973 by J.B. West, who began work at the White House as assistant to the chief usher in 1941, later became the chief usher and 'retired' in 1969. I believe he was the person in the movie "The Butler" who denied the workers of color at the White House equal pay until the Johnson administration, but I would have to rewatch "The Butler" to be sure.Like "The Butler," West describes life in the White House from the start of his career during FDR's residency until the beginning of the Nixon administration. Unlike "The Butler," West worked more directly with the First Ladies and details of the mansion and management of the employees that served the mansion rather than working solely for the president. Thus, if you are interested in knowing the habits and personalities of the First Ladies or the details of interior decorating, this is your book.Of course, we also see West's side of the deaths of FDR and JFK, the illnesses of DDE, and the relationships between incoming and outgoing presidents. But in this book there is more about the upkeep of the structure of the mansion, which was gutted and completely rebuilt on the inside during Truman's office as it was discovered when Truman's bathtub began to fall through the floor. There is also a lot of information about the First Ladies management skills, decorating preferences, relationships with their spouses and the behaviors of the children. We find out which presidents slept in the same bed with their wives and which did not.West discusses the difficulties of meeting the needs of family guests versus the needs of diplomatic guests. He provides amusing anecdotes about Winston Churchill, who must have been quite a character, and Queen Elizabeth, who sounds more down to earth in West's view than I would have imagined. He also tells of the elaborate plans that must happen behind the scenes so that White House events came off without a snag. While West declares an allegiance to the mansion first and foremost, he doesn't throw dirt about the First Families. Granted this book was published in the '70s and there was still a certain respect of the First Family at that time by the press and the opposing political party, as opposed to the dirt that is slung in all directions at this time. He takes an objective view of the personalities of the Presidents and First Ladies, describing them with respect even when he struggled to meet their demanding requirements. Not the best written book, and I eagerly looked forward to reading about the next administration being somewhat bored with household details such as furnishings, china and carpets of the previous. However, if you are interested in the history of the mansion itself, this would be a worthwhile read.

A story that is told so simply that it has the ring of truth about it. You almost expect an Upstairs Downstairs type of story but it is nothing like it. This book gave a great measure of humanity to the Presidents it covers and their First Ladies showing just how influential the Ladies were. Highly reccommended
