I'm really happy with this guide, it didn't disappoint me. As promised on the advertisements, it is a complete guide for Pastel beginner's. It brings information about the different materials used in pastel painting, including good tips for cleaning and maintenance. It contains a gallery, where some nice pastel paintings are exposed. They are a very good reference to understand the possibilities on Pastel arts. Finally, the step-by-step exercises are easy but not simple, they are quite challenging. Wich is good and pleasant! The paintings reproduced by the exercises are beautiful works. It seems they have been carefully chosen to explain and train the artist on a comprehensive range of different techniques, styles and surfaces-including canvas. It is not usual to find detailed instructions for painting pastels on canvas in beguiner's guides. Very pleasant and instructive.

I wanted a book to refresh my memory on how to paint with Pastels. This has been a good book to do the job.

This a good short, basic book for people like me who are just beginning to do some figurative pastels. it is informative and the suugested projects are helpful--they include a wide range of pastels to paint: landscapes, portraits, etc. i bought it from amazon and it arrived promptly in new condition--it was new.

I have since found some better books. However, this one was very helpful in getting me started. I recommend it for the first time pastel artist for sure.

I purchased this book, thinking it was a beginner's book as the title states. It is, in a sense. However, if you are not well versed in the visual arts, this book is really not for a beginner.For what it's worth, most of the works in this book are appalling to my taste. Art is subjective and personal. You may enjoy them.The projects that covered each technique were not attractive to me. I did not enjoy the lessons and did not learn from them.The book has an abbreviated feel to it. The introduction is short, the materials section is short, the "gallery" is short. In short, this book fell short of my expectations.Also, The project photo is at the beginning of the "lesson". Once you turn the page to start the step-by-step lesson, you have to continuously flip back and forth to see what you are supposed to be doing. I found the process frustrating. Between reading what was supposed to be done in that step, grabbing the correct colour and flipping back and forth, trying to hold the book open and jostle my project, I eventually gave up and decided to purchase another book.If you are NOT a beginning artist and you are just curious about techniques in this medium, go for it.

I really enjoyed the chapter that showed us about how the other girls came to live at the boarding house. Im glad that they are back in the mix. It should be interesting to see how she ties the whole thing up in the next volume. But i think im going to get the ending ive been hoping for!!

A lot of Back Stories in this volume which very entertaining and funny as usual. At least Tsukimi is rescued and brought back to Japan from Singapore. Lots of storylines being juggled and being advanced. Tsunami has a Marriage proposal and the Jellyfish Clothes Brand still needs to be launched. Definitely a Fun series to read.

I bought the book for the good old JLU art, not so much the story. And there is enough of it to enjoy. The 10 pages of art, plus filer, was very satisfying.The story is OK, be it a tad too simple and more aimed at a younger audience. Good read, feels like the old 20 minitue episodes. I suppose its more of a PSA on cheetah population problems, but considering who gives the lecture to whom, its a tad stupid. Also, the story ending leaves a lot out on what happens to the extra cheetahs.

This book is a tinsy bit aggressive to kids but it was a very nice book to me and I do recommend it to you and it also includes alot of other heros like Cyborg and lots of other

Fun book. Enjoyed reading it with my daughter. Great way to introduce her to positive female comic book characters.

I read and enjoy steampunk, but sometimes I'm not in the mood, (and expect a young reader might not be in the mood), for lovingly detailed descriptions and world building. You can get page after page of description of some clockwork contraption, or a whole chapter devoted to a tour of a steam powered engine room. That's not what you get here.Reeve is great at broad stroke world building. He creates the London traction city in a chapter or two. He shows us all of the levels, how it works, how people fit into it, and the larger world within which it operates, and he frames all of the major characters within the first 50 pages. After that we are off to the races on a high energy, twisty and marvelously colorful adventure.And this is a marvelous adventure. Our hero is a bit timid but finds the swashbuckler within. Our heroine is tough, smart, resourceful, and on a mission. This is a fine team. Around and through them we meet a memorable cast of colorful and compelling allies and villains. This is ripping stuff. Lots of running, hiding, lurking, escaping, fighting, and derring do. I was a bit surprised by the level of violence, and not cartoon violence, in the story, but that's treated as a serious consequence of dangerous times and this is still, after all, a dystopian world tale.So, I enjoyed this immensely and appreciated the high level of imagination and creative energy that went into building and then convincingly portraying this fascinating world.

The Story-Tom is a junior historian in the city of London. It is a thousand years since humanity almost destroyed itself in a sixty minute war, and now all cities are built on huge traction machines that roll over the earth and snatch up smaller traction cities.Tom is sent down to the guts to look for artifacts after London eats a mining town. While there he is surprised to see his idol, Valentine, head historian and archaeologist of London. Things turn bad when one of the mining town survivors charges Valentine and tries to kill him. Tom runs after the villain, amazed to see that it is a young woman with a scar down the side of her face and a missing eye.Through different means, they both end up expelled from the city and for the first time Tom finds himself on real ground. Together Tom and Hester try to find their way back to London, Hester to finish her murder and Tom just to get home. However, along the journey Tom learns the truth about his idol Valentine and the ugliness of living in a city eat city world.My Thoughts-This book scores points for originality. The idea of an entire city, as big as London, rolling around on traction wheels and getting their supplies by eating up lesser cities and stripping them bare, blows my mind. I honestly would not have been able to picture it if it hadn't been for the movie trailer. Whether it is in any way realistic is another story, but since this is a fantasy/dystopian novel, I'll let it roll.Let's talk about our main characters, there is actually a quad, Tom and Hester and then Katherine (Valentine's daughter) and Bevis (a junior engineer). Tom and Hester are working their way back to London, discovering flying airships and other mini cities along the way. They also learn of the resistance movement against traction cities. Katherine and Bevis both live in London. Katherine is disillusioned by facts she finds out about her father and Bevis knows the secrets of the engineers and the robots and deadly weapon that are being built. Together they try from within London to stop the insane mayor from destroying the world.The plot is full of twists and turns and as a reader I was eager to find out what the world was like that Hester and Tom lived in. It was also interesting to see technology from our current day have such an impact in the future. There is great tension and build up and the ending scenes are full of action. I enjoyed my ride through this novel. However, I felt as if something were missing. Tom and Hester are great characters, but there is nothing very special about them. I wanted there to be something that only Hester or Tom could accomplish that would save the city or world. Some type of hidden hero archetype or unknown skill that surfaces. I needed to feel that this same adventure could not have happened to any other two kids.So, overall I recommend this book for its originality and action and I'm giving it 4 stars!

I found out about this book after seeing a preview for the movie and doing a bit of research. The idea of a sci-fi adventure/intrigue with moving cities that need to "eat" other cities sounded like it would be a fascinating read.Sadly, I can't say that I found the story to be nearly as compelling as the idea of it. I can't really put a finger on why I'm not enthralled. The idea is there, the action is there, but I guess the characters fall a bit flat for me. I am finding the book interesting, but not strongly and I've already started to lose interest in any of the sequels.It's just missing the magic piece I guess.

Maybe I've come to expect too much from the likes of Orson Scott Card. I'm definitely NOT the Young Adult demographic I suppose this book is aimed at, but even if I were, I think I would have found this book uncaptivating. I love the idea, and really look forward to seeing the movie, but this book's treatment of the story felt insipid, lukewarm, unconvincing.If you want to get an idea what the upcoming movie is all about, maybe it's worth $6.I had a really hard time caring about any of the characters. Too many of them - even the apparent main characters - were just tropes and not really developed beyond those tropes. The author has a habit of making a character appear to be somewhat important, and then killing them off rather flippantly, and in a way that shows they were not really that important. After a while, I started thinking "Cool kid. Shouldn't really start rooting for him, because he's probably dead in 20 pages anyway."And nobody really mourned anyone that was killed off. They were just - gone.Without any spoilers, I was also bothered by the sudden character turnarounds several times - I don't think people change their core nature as readily as they were portrayed in this book. "Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father prepare to die... oh, we're best friends now." Wait - what?I guess my review boils down to this: if you replaced all the character development in this book, I'd love the story.

In short: This is an excellent resource for anyone who wants to be better at telling stories. This is a skill I've wanted to develop, so I started with this book. Really glad I did. In fact, it ended up winning me major Boyfriend Points.I offered my copy of the book to my girlfriend when she had to attend a company retreat and participate in a get-to-know-you exercise where everyone had to tell a two-minute story. We're talking about standing up and telling a personal anecdote in front of an audience of about fifty coworkers, managers, and direct-reports. Oh, and my girlfriend has social anxiety. So, needless to say... there was a good bit of hand-wringing and deliberation over this exercise.Imagine how happy I was when she came back from the retreat glowing and excited to tell me about how well her story had gone. Not only did it feel good and comfortable to tell, but it also got a lot of positive feedback. Her coworkers really enjoyed it. She had directly applied many of the concepts explained so clearly and entertainingly in Long Story Short and hit the ball out of the park.Buying Long Story Short is a favor you can do for yourself if you want to be better at storytelling. It might even burnish your reputation as a partner.

I bought this for tips about writing short stories. (Yes, I knew this was written for storytellers, meaning: people who tell stories, on stage.)While most of the book wasn't useful to me, the writing tips that I DID glean -- like opening with something credible that connects with your reader/audience -- are tremendously valuable. They're things I wouldn't have thought of, myself, and I've never seen this kind of advice in writing books.It's not a book for EVERY kind of writer. However, if you're writing "short reads" or short stories, and you need to grab (hook) your reader quickly, this book provides great insights.

I am in a storytelling cast at my local comedy club and I didn't like how one of my performances had gone. I bought Margot's book and it made all of the difference in the world. I wrote my story and it was flat and awful. I went back through her book chapter by chapter and tried to make adjustments based on her advice. It worked! I told a bold story and the audience laughed the whole time. I also discovered my personal voice/style by doing the exercises and answering the questions in this book. I also watched several of Margot's videos on YouTube. I don't have the same style as her, but I was inspired to do better and it worked.

I'm new to the storytelling scene and found this book to be amazingly helpful. From learning how to mine my life and history for stories to knowing how to best put it all together so it connects with the audience. This book has it all. Also now that I've finished it, I attend storytelling shows and can see, in practice, how much of the advice given in the book plays out in real life. The advice for how to connect with the audience is especially helpful.

I was lucky enough to take Margot's class at UCB.In my professional role as a TV and Radio host both in the US and in Australia, I've used what Margot has taught me to propel my career forward and open up many new opportunities that weren't available to me before.Get this book.You won't regret it.And yes she really, really loves game shows.
