This would have had 5 stars as this manual is absolutely what I was looking for with tons of great information BUT . . . . . . there is a problem with this book as printed. The book I got, (U.S. Army Survival Manual, Dep of the Army, Revised and updated by Colonel Peter T Underwood USMC (Ret) (cameo cover - just like the photo shown) (copyright 2011) ---Here's the issues1. The CONTENTS PAGE only shows Chapters 1 - 5. There is NO contents page for Chapters 6 - 19 and this is not a torn out page -- it is a printing error because the BACKSIDE of the 1 page contents page IS printed with the List of Appendix A - H.BUT . . there is so MUCH great information in this book and it is like new at a used price that I decided not to return it.Instead, I found an older 2001 edition online and I was able to copy/paste that into a word doc, input page #'s, and print that out in the 6"w x 9"H format of this book.Also the 2001 Edition contains other chapters this one doesn't. So I just printed them out online. Unfortunately that is another 59 pages of printing but it can be cut down to this book format size as that is how I printed it.Really, this is a book every survivalist should have but might also come in VERY handy for the camper or hiker in a jam.Wish it had been complete -- but I'll take it as it is. Just modified it. And learned a lot doing that.
Great survival guide packed with lots of great info. Perfect for beginner survivalists, or even more experienced people also. Covers different scenarios... lost at sea, desert survival, arctic survival, & etc. Also has a section covering poisonous snakes, insects, plants & etc with good color pics. Great addition to your bug out bag or atleast the knowledge it has to offer.
Good info in it. Bought the book in case we're ever faced with a situation where there's no power for a device. Was afraid it would be dated, but it covers the basics, which is most important in a survival situation.
I really like the full color pictures of the edible and poisonous plants, as well as the advice to NEVER EAT MUSHROOMS. However, I would like to point out that there is something missing that was in the original document (of which I have only a digital copy, a pity). There is a section at the end of the original that describes survival conditions in Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical environments, as well as how to take care of yourself after exposure and information on shelter from nuclear fallout/radiation that explains breakdown and half-life and how certain materials affect the radiation absorbtion. I was very disappointed to see that it wasn't included but am glad that I have this information available anyway. I plan on printing that section and placing it in the back of the book when I finish putting together my bug out bag. Overall very satisfied.
I just got this book and am starting to read through it, on page 35. So far i feel that it is going to have a lot of great information i'll need to be prepared for survival situations. One of the good points i noticed when flipping through is there are color pictures of edible plants in the back plus a bunch of helpful information regarding, trapping, first aid, signalling, and a lot of other topics. Once i finish reading it i will update this review further, but from what i've seen so far i would recommend this book.I would also recommend the Gem SAS Survival Guide [Paperback] by John "Lofty" Wiseman to go along with this book. Great to keep in your car or pocket just in case you are out when a situation occurs.
Awesome field manual. Hardback and sturdy. Contains a wealth of information on so many different survival needs for anyone who is planning on camping or stay outdoors in the wild for long periods of time. Just as good as the real Army field manual. Also this book contains extras such as edible plants and insects, as well as poisonous plants and insects guides in the back.
This book was a gift to a young man who enjoys camping in all kinds of weather and terrain. He let me know that he really enjoys it and is trying out some suggestions. He said the information was fresh and new to him and that it was well put together and easy to understand and duplicate. Don't you just love it when someone you shop for enjoys your gift? If you have a camper/explorer in your group of friends and family this would make a nice gift.
It gives detailed information about surviving different situations, like being stranded at ocean, desert, jungle, etc. I got one for a family member and they had been in the military for a couple of years and they thought it was informative. Its nicely organized, it has stuff about poisonous snakes, plants, fish, and has info about edible plants.
