Nonetheless, the rare victory that comes with the "official" recognition of a once-dubious aquatic creature (a giant squid, say, or a megamouth shark) has emboldened the authors to attempt the definitive guide to the elusive "mystery creatures" that might populate over two-thirds of the planet's surface. Unfortunately, the authors' focus is primarily taxonomic rather than narrative or expository, which makes for a disappointingly dull read. Plodding through a detailed animal-classification system quickly becomes a bit, er, dry, so readers looking for lively nature stories would be wise to avoid this particular volume, as the quasi-mythological nature of its subject does little to spice things up. Even such unlikely beasts as Great Sea Centipedes or Waterhorses (of which Nessie may be the most well-known example) are handled primarily in such clinical terms as size, range and likely habitat, supplemented with brief and surprisingly dreary "descriptive incidents" and eyewitness accounts. Heavy on methodology and light on the mystery and excitement of the best nature writing, this book may spark in readers the sense that the authors were more worried about the criticism of their peers than about the drowsiness of their readers. I love sea serpents and lake monsters so much. I doubt I would if I ever had a close encounter with one, though. That's why I lay down in the comfort of my own bed and read about other people's harrowing encounters and smile quietly to myself. Yes....I recommend.

If you are looking for a good overview of sea serpents this book nicely covers it. Each creature is given its own short section that lists witnesses, overall sightings, and history of the creature. This guide is well researched.I could have done without the authors trying to put each creature into a specific category rather than just letting the sightings define the creatures.The lack of photos of these places also detracts from the overall feel of this guide. It would greatly enhance this guide if we got to actually see these places.One part of the guide that I really enjoyed was the inclusion of lesser known creatures that may not warrant a full section. These creatures are listed by state and country in the Appendix.

The majority of information in the volume of this book "Lake Monsters & Sea Serpents" is just a bunch of quotes from previous publications. You are basically reading a collection of portions of other people's work and not reading anything original, authentic or new. I think it was poorly written even though I find the topic facinating. If you're just looking for a gathering of information from other people's research then this is the book for you.

I bought this book as part of my research for MY book. It is very well written and incredibly interesting.

Loved it! Enjoyed reading about Champy in Lake Champlain and other possible sea monsters. Factual, interesting, and not over the top in trying to get you to believe the whole thing.

Good field guide to many known creatures and occurrences but also a few obscure ones and detailed maps of the sighting locations.

Some of the most meaningful years of my life were when I was taking Halifu’s classes at Everybody’s Creative Arts Center (ECAC) in Oakland, California, a unique studio whose motto was “where life and the arts come together.” The time was the 1980s, and I was looking for a dance class that was diverse in ethnic and racial makeup. Not only did I find that at ECAC, but I also found a teacher who mixed spirituality and dance theatre with dancing—something that was not common in other classes. In addition to taking classes, I was totally moved by the dance concerts that Halifu and staff put together—especially The Evolution of Black Dance, which mesmerized me from the minute I happened to wander into a rehearsal of this masterpiece. Dancing in Blackness is both a scholarly, well-written work that makes a nice contribution to the world of Black dance and a recounting of the exciting adventures of a woman who has danced all around the world. Each chapter is captivating as it relates the experiences of a charismatic teacher with a vision. Every new LAMP developer should be forced to read this before doing any production work. It's not very in depth and does not cover more advanced techniques, but does cover the absolute minimum a Apache+PHP programmer should know before handling their users' data.

The book is only 85 pages long (if you take out the Appendices and filler material). That alone gets it four out of five stars. Well... not really... but there's a lot to be said for producing a book that will actually get read. You can read the whole thing in one bathroom sitting, assuming you just returned from Mexico. By comparison, similar books like "Pro PHP Security" by Chris Snyder and Michael Southwell (also a very good book) are more along the lines of 500 pages and such books are intended as comprehensive reference books rather than tutorials. You'd have to eat at a restaurant in North Korea to get all the way through the Pro PHP Security book. Seriously though - the criticisms of this book primarily pretain to its lack of detail - but I'd rather actually finish a high level book than have a detailed book sit on my shelf unread.Chris' book is great. It's chocked full of easy to understand explanations and little five line code fragments to demonstrate what he's explaining. Sure enough, if you read the whole thing, you'll understand the essentials of PHP Security. Hey - perhaps that explains the title?Do I need this book if my company already uses web scanning security software? Yes - you won't understand the problems that those products identify if you don't understand PHP security basics. If you don't understand reported errors, You'll be tempted to ignore or suppress warnings that you don't understand. Chris' book will give you the knowledge that you need in a few easy to follow pages.There are a few ommissions. They include:OMISSION #1: The book should mention somewhere that many of the security vulnerabilities it describes are not unique to PHP - especially big ones like cross-site scripting and SQL injection. While PHP has some vulnerabilities that other languages do not (and vis-versa), Java, C#, Ruby, and all the other server-side languages can also be attacked with cross-site scripting, SQL injection, session spoofing, cookie theft, backdoor URLs, etc., etc.OMISSION #2: The book would have benefited from the addition of a page of system administration best practices to improve security rather than confining itself only to coding best practices. For example, it's easy for developers to accidentally open security holes by making very small changes to the PHP.ini file. A good best practice is to use the operating system to restrict access to that file in the production environment. Or it would have good to see Chris distill role-based security administration policies, logging, or remote procedure call policies down to just the most important principles. He has a knack for filtering out the noise, and if he had added that additional 86th page, I swear I would have read it too.OMISSION #3: It's worth mentioning how modular design has a very big impact on the number of vulnerabilities inside an application. This is especially important for PHP, because PHP code is often a little more haphazard than code written in other languages - primarily because of the culture that surrounds PHP but also for a few other reasons (we cover those reasons in the PHP Chapter of our own book on the strengths and weaknesses of various technologies).Bottom line:These criticisms are very minor. The book is short, easy-to-read, and filled with information that is absolutely essential to know if you are to responsibly deploy a server-side PHP application. Look at the table of contents. There were some very good best practices in this book that I immediately adopted. I'm sure most people who would be interested in this book (experienced to advanced developers) have heard many of the best practice concepts in this book before from various sources, however I've yet to see someone develop a method to handling these ideas.It was a shorter book than I was expecting (yes, that's my goof for not noticing the page count when I purchased it) however I'm glad that I didn't notice that fact before purchasing otherwise I might have overlooked it as more of a reference book rather than a teaching book. I was very happy with the book and would recommend it to anyone interested in some solid best practices for PHP security.

Easy to understand and to the point

I am PHP software developer for many years. I am buying that type of books with hope to find at least one new trick or some interesting code style. From that point of view - the book is worth to be bought. The only disadvantage is the size, it is too short (about 100 pages).

This is an excellent read for anyone, not just those using PHP. The provided information is very nicely laid out with very fluff but good practical understanding and application. A must read for anyone doing any professional programming.

About 15 years ago, PHP was still missing a lot of features that, today, programmers take for granted. PHP also lagged significantly in adding features critical to secure software.Unfortunately, during the interim, a set of "best practices" emerged that involved doing things like salting passwords and using a function named "mysql_real_escape_string" (so named because "mysql_escape_string" and similar functions were found to be inadequate protection.) Indeed, while these were the best ideas at the time when the language lacked a lot of features, they are now considered *worst* practices, and are of little use. Instead, programmers should use parametric queries with bound parameters and bcrypt-style hashing of passwords - but the book barely mentions them at all, and relegates these superior practices to mere footnotes.Burn this book. The author is ignorant of real security threats and is 15 years out of date.

This book has 7 chapters (Chapters 2 through 8) devoted to the 7 issues. The material is superficial, it does not cover many, many other issues related to PHP Security.At best, the whole book feels like a quickly written computer magazine article, not a good, comprehensive book.Not worth the money. Just do a search for "PHP Security" on the internet and read a few articles and you will know more than this book.

Awesome read. Author notes his sources and debunk many that suggests that the Egyptians were any other race than Black. Even when Herodotus is mentioned as an historical fact, many refuse to accept truth but the author gives plenty evidence. I like it when he says, "Theories are more precious to some scholars than facts, even when the facts flatly contradict their theories (John D Jackson). So true! Too bad that the world is full of liars or even people who were misinformed by liars because of prejudice and hatred. Awesome read though... really enjoyed the book.

Anyone wishing to go beyond what the education system in America can provide should read this book. it should be read with Cheikh Anta Diop's precolonial Black Africa..

Excellent material, and reference source. My only complaint is several pages in my copy were cut irregular, with some pages shorter than others, and other pages were topped off too long leaving the bottom half of characters showing. Resulting in a non-professional (interior) appearance.

This is very old and very poorly done. He starts out mentioning [not discussing] 19th century concepts of race and says now that is wrapped up let's move on. Believe me NOTHING was wrapped up in his faulty thinking. He has no academic background and before you call me an academic snob be aware that academia teachers historians how to critically analyze data and evaluate sources. He does not critically analyze or evaluate anything. Some readers say it is very well referenced. There is no bibliography or references cited. Just saying an author's name in the text is NOT a reference. A reference is something you can go back to. This information is missing. I'm off to find something more recent and valuable to read. In this day of fake news, you need to be careful what you read. It might have been an okay article 80 years ago but it does not stand up to scrutiny today. It is an article, not a book. Beware of this.

I'm a fan of the author's work. Nearly every paragraph supported with a reference. I have many of the books he sited so I'm familiar with his theses.

Not worth your time. Petty self-righteousness and conspiracy theories. Spends way too much time beating the white supremacism horse, almost no time on Ethiopian contributions.

It is difficult to add anything new to what has already been said regarding this wonderful new book on Theodore Roosevelt. The book has a hefty text of 817 pages, and is the longest book I have ever read. Be patient with it. It is certainly worth the time and effort even though you may not know much about Roosevelt other than he is one of the fixtures on Mount Rushmore. This book focuses primarily on his efforts on behalf of conserving the natural and wildlife resources in the United States despite the howls of protest from the titans of railroad companies, lumber barons, and mine owners who would rather rape the land in search of a few dirty dollars. This Republican president would never make it as a Republican today. Roosevelt was responsible for creating five national parks, eighteen national monuments, in addition to several federal bird reservations, national game preserves, and national forests. Much of what succeeding generations have been able to enjoy can be traced to the foresight of Theodore Roosevelt while his detractors would willingly have sacrificed the land for a few quick dollars.This book is also about other conservationist heroes such as John Muir, Iowa congressman John Lacey, and warden Guy Bradley who was murdered in the line of duty protecting birds from rookeries who killed for the feathers. It is also full of interesting anecdotes. When Roosevelt and Muir were camping in Yosemite Roosevelt was regaling Muir with tales of his big game hunting. A bored Muir finally asked, "When are you going to get beyond the boyishness of killing things?" Roosevelt responded with a "I guess you're right." Roosevelt considered Thomas Jefferson "vastly overrated", but felt he deserved greatness for his purchase of the Louisiana territory from France for fifteen million dollars. Roosevelt also didn't care for the gasoline engine because "they scared the birds."I knew Roosevelt was on Mount Rushmore for his contributions to conservation during the years of his presidency, but until I read this book I had no idea of the magnitude of his contributions and of others who contributed as well. We can be thankful that these men lived to preserve the beauty of America for future generations instead of jumping at the chance of temporal wealth through lumbering or mining. Don't be intimidated by the 817 pages that make up the text of this book. It may take you a while to get through it, but the time will certainly be worth it.I did find three minor typing errors the author may want to correct in a paperback format of the book. Page 465 the sixth line from the top. The last word "the" is printed twice. Page 477 the third line from the top. The word "the" is printed twice. Page 644 the fourth line from the bottom. The word "looking" is printed twice. I mention this in case the author may want to make these corrections in the paperback version of the book.

Theodore Roosevelt has been one of my favorite historical figures for almost my entire adult life. As someone who has a hard time narrowing down my own interests (let alone reading list), the breadth and depth of his pursuits is both fascinating and reassuring. As someone who enjoys being outside in wild spaces, his efforts in preserving them has been inspiring.He’s also one of the most intellectually challenging figures for me. Without delving too far into politics, I generally prefer the federal government to cast a smaller shadow in the average American’s life than is generally the case. TR’s progressive vision and use of the “bully pulpit” therefore give me pause, force me to reflect, and often leave me scratching my head and short of answers. However, one area where his inclinations and my beliefs intersect is in the preservation of the commons and protection of public lands.This is the central theme of Douglas Brinkley’s Wilderness Warrior. Calling it a biography of Roosevelt, while technically accurate, sells it short. Yes, you’ll read about his somewhat sickly youth. You’ll read about his time at Harvard (and see pictures of the pretty epic sideburns he wore in his early adulthood). You’ll read about the Rough Riders and his time as a rancher. But all of this revolves around the central theme of the fondness he developed early in life, thanks in part to his Uncle Robert, for nature – and the efforts he made as governor and president on its behalf.Brinkley is a professor at Rice University, author of almost two dozen books, and member of the Council on Foreign Affairs (which is to say, he certainly doesn’t need my review to sell his book – and not just because it’s been out for almost a decade). Among his other awards, this book earned the 2009 National Outdoor Book Award.Not surprisingly, then, the book is thoroughly researched and richly annotated. If you’re anything like me, its notes section will make your “want to read list” have a bit of a growth spurt. It takes short detours to explore the lives and exploits of people who lived where the rubber of TR’s initiatives met the proverbial road. While those detours add a bit to the work’s heft, I felt it placed this focused biography – this exploration of but one aspect of a larger-than-life man’s multi-faceted personality – in a broader and richer context.If there’s a downside to the book, it’s that its length and detail might make it less than accessible to a casual reader. While I’m enough of a bibliophile and history geek to have thoroughly enjoyed it, I have to admit that it’s not quite the sort of history or biography that feels more like a story. It doesn’t always move fast, and the sheer amount of information packed into it can make it at times a slightly dense read. But the reader sufficiently interested in Theodore Roosevelt, protection of wild spaces, or both, will be richly rewarded for their time.

(Because I am an Aussie living in America).
