My 10-year old manga-loving son read this without prompting and enjoyed it so much he came to me and asked me to find more books like this. Great combo of the timeless Dickens classic in the fresh style of manga. May just be how we interest the next generation in the classics. Please render more classics that a boy might like in manga!
I vividly remember the novel Great Expectations, but this anime books is brilliant! I hope the Manga Classics makes an anime book of Charles Dickens' famous novel A Christmas Carol!
This manga is a wonderful interpretation of Dickens's work. I thoroughly enjoyed it, have gone back and reread it, and am happy I purchased it.
This adaption is clean and very close to the novel, and the art is beautiful.
I think this story is excellentPip and Estella are reunited and reconciled which leads to marriage and I know that in my heart.
Does not retain many of Dickens's good words, but does stick to the story.
I have already read three books of this series and they are all extraordinary, as soon as I finish one I immediately want to read another one and especially to read the original. The plot is summarized in a perfect way: it is flowing, clear and compelling, the characters are well defined and characterized.I have not yet finished reading the original novel by Dickens but for what I've read the plot is faithful to it.For those unfamiliar with the work of Dickens is the story of Pip, a poor orphan raised by his sister and his brother-in-law, in love with Estella, a girl with a heart of stone. He will try to redeem himself and become a gentleman for her but will he succeed in conquering her?I loved all the characters but Joe and Biddy were extraordinary: sweet, generous, loving. The drawings are well done, perfectly able to convey the emotions of the characters and very beautiful scenary.I definitely recommend it to young people who approach for the first time to this classic or to those people who are terrified of it but it's good for everyone.
If any of you love Dickens please stand up and buy this comic on the spot. It is both accurate and thoughtful as a visual rendition of one of Charles Dickens's best known novels. So my warnings are not against the manga, but against Dickens and this novel in particular.This novel has all gothic elements of Christmas Carol without delivering and end with a real hope of a better future for the main character. Little Pip is redeemed from penury thanks to a good deed he did to a convict, but fails to see past appearances and as a poor judge of character fails at understanding what is really best for him beyond nice clothes, gentlemanly manners and a life of general comfort. He thus loses what was probably his only real chance at genuine mutual love to an illusion, the infatuation for a girl who has been brought up not to believe in love and to deceive men to her personal benefit by the very grotesque character of Miss Havisham, an old lady clad in white who had her heart broken by a rake as a young lady. The connections between the characters are revealed during the novel, but Pip fails to see the truth until it is presented to him on a gilded plate, thus putting his life in danger more than once. His last meeting with Estella has the bitter-sweet taste of the realisation of precious things lost forever and I am grateful that this manga does not make any attempt to let the reader believe there can be anything other than forgiveness, but not a second chance, in Pip's and Estella's future.In conclusion, if you are already familiar with this novel, you will enjoy the artwork and script, if you are not, make sure you are ready for a tale with no real happily ever after, at least for the main character.
