This was a fascinating account of deaths in Mount Washington. It contains some of the strongest winds on the planet and a large number of people go hiking, skiing, mountain climbing and more not adequately prepared. This mountain is particularly dangerous, with varying temperatures, steep trails, narrow passages and more. The majority of people who perished, we're overconfident or did not take the dangers seriously. More people die or are injured in the outdoors than many think. The author's detailed research is evident and provides life saving tips as well. A thrilling book I found hard to put down.
A series of hair-raising true events, which, unfortunately, ended in demise on the highest peak in the New Hampshire Presidential range of mountains. Covers more than 100 years in time. Shows how the incredible wintry weather on this unique mountaintop can result in unexpected catastrophe for the unwary or the unlucky. An exciting, if tragic, read.
I'm an avid reader of these books about accidents in the White Mountains. I was excited when I saw a new one was out. I was disappointed, though. This book just rehashes information from other books like 'Not Without Peril' and 'Death in the White Mountains'. If you've read these latter two, don't bother buying this one. The author even quotes 'Not Without Peril' several times. It's well enough written but leaves out some details like the year of a couple of accidents. And please, it's Tuckerman not Tuckerman's Ravine. Another error is that Matrosova never actually reached the summit of Mt. Adams. According to the detailed and highly recommended book 'Where You'll Find Me', she turned around just short of the summit. This may sound like nitpicking, but because reaching the summit of Adams had been a particular goal for Matrosova, her failing to reach it makes the tragedy that much more poignant. It becomes obvious in subtle ways that this author lacks the intimate familiarity with the Whites that the authors of the other books I mentioned exhibit. While Minetor obviously did a lot of research, it seems that her only exposure to Mt.Washington was a drive up the Auto Road. By comparison, the other authors have hiked extensively in the area and it shows in their recounting of the various accidents. So I'd give this book a pass unless you're looking for a quick overview or have read nothing else on this subject.
Death is a subject that most people find interesting - remember the popularity of the HBO series "Six Feet Under!" Death on Mount Washington is a gritty, gripping, but very entertaining book about the deaths of people who made terrible mistakes, missteps, or misjudged the conditions on this lofty peak. My husband and I traveled up onto Mount Washington with our 2 dogs in the car back in early October of 2004. Since the weather was extremely foggy, cloudy and cold, and we had our dogs with us we didn't get out to hike or even to look around. We might've been one of the statistics Randi wrote about if the day had been warm and sunny and we'd gone for a spur-of-the-moment hike! Her book is hard to put down, especially if you have a fascination with how people passed away and like true stories. That is my kind of reading! It may save your life if you intend to do any kind of activities on a mountain anywhere. The author writes her narrative non-fiction and gives enough description of the poor souls who lost their lives to the mountain so that the reader feels like he or she knows them and feels empathy for them. It's a real page-turner and hard to put down. And it's a good reminder that nature is not to be trifled with and demands our respect, and we need to remember not to let our own arrogance goad us into folly when doing any outside activity: hiking, bicycling, mountain climbing, or water sports. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good, compelling read.
I read this book while training to climb Mt Whitney. It, at first, seemed an off choice.Ms Minetor does an excellent job of creating a background for the many hikers as well as for a very unusual and treacherous mountain in Vermont. Her style is a mix of matter-of-fact and awe... In fact, it seemed as if I was talking with her in a tavern at the base of the mountain where she was regaling me with stories of the mountain. I learned just as much about the hikers who lost their lives ( or barely survived ) as I did about a very unusually unique mountain in Vermont. A thoroughly interesting read and one I will read more about...It turned out to be the best choice for my hike, actually. I was aware of not only MY mountains intricacies , but also the difference between hardiness and fool-hardiness.
