This is the best vampire anthology I have ever encountered. When it first came out in 2009 I got the paperback edition (no hardback ever offered, I think). Later I also got the Audible edition, although I have not listened to that in its entirety (appears to be excellent, as well). The paperback unfortunately uses a small font and very poor paper quality. Why, after all these years, has the editor (the great Otto Penzler) and the publisher (Vintage Crime/Black Lizard) not sought to offer this anthology in Kindle/ebook format? This is a massive volume, which again uses a small font and poor paper, and if there was ever a book that would be great to carry around on my Kindle, this is it. Vintage Crime/Black Lizard has offered other huge anthologies similar to this one, in the thriller/detective genre, etc., in Kindle form -- why not this one?
A great anthology of the genre spanning many years. From pre-Dracula to the present. A good insight into the writing styles of then and now can be had, not only in the treatment of Vampiric tales, but writing generally. If you love reading about Vampires and want to explore the subject further this is a good start.
If you love vampire stories, you'll love this collection. There are well known stories from masters (King, Bradbury, Beaumont, etc.) as well as some obscure stories.
Every fall, I revisit horror classics in film and in books and when I saw "The Vampire Archives", I just knew I had to have it. The contents are amazing in the breadth of vampire stories and at 1034 pages, this is one heavy tome. The biggest flaw in this publication is in the abysmal binding and paper quality. The paper is flimsy and as careful as I am with all my books, I don't see how this book is going to hold up over repeated use. The cover is flimsy too and as much as I love the cover art (reminds me of those classic Hammer horror flicks), I think the publishers could have done so much better. Perhaps in the future, this could be re-issued as a two volume edition in hardcover and with better quality paper. That would be ideal.OK, ranting aside, the contents are impressive. As some reviewers have noted, there are some significant omissions, notably John Polidori's "The Vampyre" (though it merits a mention in the bibliography at the back of the book). This anthology is great. There are stories by any number of authors from the past through to today. Love them all.
This Vampire book is huge (which is great). My only complaint is the choice of paper the publishers used. The cover as well as the actual pages feel like ultra thin rice paper. (Think phone book quality) I have no problem with it being a paper back, but a book this thick could've (and needed) a thicker paper for the cover as well as some better quality paper inside.
Great anthology! Purchased used as a gift, received in good condition.
Very good
